This impressive and highly collectible bronze sculpture, entitled “The Apollo Bronze – Man on the Moon” was created to commemorate the upcoming historic 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission and man first walking on the moon in 1969. A limited edition of this timeless bronze sculpture was created by renowned American sculptor Kevin Christison who is best known for his dramatic figurative sculptures. No more than 100 pieces will ever be commissioned.
It is engraved on the underside with the Aldrin Family Foundation Foundation logo, as well as the artist’s signature, and is numbered. The base will also feature the engraved words, “Apollo Man on the Moon – celebrating 50 Years since the Apollo 11 Mission in July 1969.”
Proceeds from sales will benefit the Aldrin Family Foundation, parent non-profit eto the ShareSpace Foundation, strives to cultivate the next generation of space leaders, entrepreneurs and explorers who will extend human habitation beyond the Earth to the Moon and Mars. The Aldrin Family Foundation continues the scientific and technical legacy of a true explorer – Apollo 11 Astronaut Dr. Buzz Aldrin – and his lifelong devotion to human space exploration.
Kevin Christison was born in 1968 in Silver Spring, Maryland and was raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. He began his college career as a football player, majoring in art history at the University of Oregon. It is there that he met a sculptor who kindled his interest in studio art, prompting him to take a year off from football and try his hand at sculpture. From the University of Oregon, Christison went on to the California College of Arts in Oakland, CA where he graduated with a BFA in Fine Art in 1991. During his time at school and shortly after, he worked as an assistant to several esteemed sculptors such as Dan Dykes, Bruce Beasley and Stephen de Staebler.
Christison relocated to Bangkok, Thailand in 2002 after being awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to lecture and create an exhibition at Silpakorn University in Bangkok, the Kingdom’s most celebrated fine art institution. In 2003 he was appointed as Foreign Specialist in Sculpture and Bronze Casting at Khon Kaen University in Thailand, where he lectured in Sculpture, Figure Modeling, and Bronze Casting and was instrumental in building the Bronze Casting facilities. Currently he divides his time between San Francisco and Bangkok.
His work focuses on the human form, using subtractive methods to alter his carefully rendered wax studies before casting them. This creates fragmentary but expressive forms that capture the lines of the human body in dramatic states of contortion or active gesture. The sculptures’ heavily worked surfaces are scored, hewn and patinated to heighten their sense of raw vitality. His work often contains references to Greek standing Kouros figures and Roman portrait busts, reflecting his ongoing fascination with classical figurative sculpture. Christison’s work has been acquired by such prestigious collections as the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, as well as numerous private, corporate, and municipal collections.
