KODACHROME
LAWRENCE SCHILLER, NICK VEASEY, TOMMY CROW, JOCK MCDONALD & SUZY RASKIN
JULY 15 – AUGUST 15
ÆRENA Galleries & Gardens invites you to see the world through the lenses of a diverse set of photographers. This group exhibition features works by Lawrence Schiller, Nick Veasey, Tommy Crow, Jock McDonald & Suzy Raskin from July 15 to August 15. Kodachrome is a method of color transparency, but more commonly known as a type of color film that Kodak started marketing in 1935. The musician Paul Simon was working on a song with the title “Coming Home” when the word “Kodachrome” came to him. Not only did the song evolve into an appreciation of the things that color our world, but it completely transformed the landscape of the photography industry.
Each artist we have selected has challenged traditional photography with various applications. Jock McDonald’s signature technique of weaving cut photo strips together has become a symbolic gesture of interconnectedness, widening our perspective on nature and human impact. Tommy Crow’s photo artworks operate as a symbol of transformation by placing each butterfly and dragonfly specimen in its own unique moment in time. Nick Veasey speculates upon the inner workings of the manufactured and natural world by using x-rays to expose what lies underneath the surface. Digitally manipulating light exposure in her photo works, Suzy Raskin highlights precious moments of mutual connection. Exposure is explored conceptually in Lawrence Schiller’s risqué photoshoot with Marilyn Monroe. Schiller captured this indelible moment on the set of Something’s Gotta Give, just 2 months before Monroe’s untimely death at the age of 36. Each photographer represented in this showcase has found a way to transcend traditional limits of photography, reaching farther to capture the subtle truths of their subjects.
Just like Kodachrome’s magical properties, we invite you to take a nuanced look into the wildly colored worlds of the iconic photographers in Kodachrome.
